System76 today released Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS, featuring the first stable version of their new Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment. This long-anticipated update is built upon an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base, following an extensive development period since the COSMIC project was first announced in 2021. Numerous alpha and beta builds preceded this stable debut. The COSMIC desktop includes a custom compositor, a new widget toolkit, and a suite of first-party applications developed by System76. Carl Richell, Founder and CEO of System76, noted that "building an entirely new Linux desktop, compositor, widget toolkit, and suite of first-party apps is no mean feat," highlighting the significant effort involved in bringing this environment to a stable release. This release aims to provide a distinct user experience for Pop!_OS users.
