Intel Xe vs. i915 Driver Performance On Linux 6.19 For Arc Alchemist GPUs Examined

Phoronix recently published a performance comparison between Intel's i915 and Xe kernel drivers for Arc Alchemist GPUs on Linux 6.19. The i915 driver is currently the default for Intel Arc A-Series "Alchemist" and Meteor Lake graphics, while the Xe driver represents Intel's modern open-source kernel graphics stack. This evaluation, part of Phoronix's year-end 2025 benchmarks, used an Intel Arc Graphics A580 to assess performance differences between the two driver options. The situation with driver choice for Arc Alchemist GPUs parallels the recent transition for older AMD GCN 1.0/1.1 GPUs, which now default to the AMDGPU driver on Linux 6.19 instead of the legacy Radeon driver. The benchmarks aim to provide insights into which Intel kernel driver delivers better performance for users of these specific GPU generations.
