Radeon Linux Driver Patches Suggest NPU Integration for Next-Gen GFX12/RDNA4 Hardware
Phoronix reports that new open-source AMD Radeon Linux driver patches for the SMU15 IP block indicate "some apparent NPU integration for future Radeon graphics." These recent patches follow initial driver contributions made in November for various next-generation graphics IP blocks, including MMHUB, PSP, and GFXHUB. The GFXHUB patches specifically pointed to these developments being part of the GFX12 / RDNA4 family. The inclusion of SMU15 support with NPU capabilities suggests that AMD's upcoming RDNA4 generation GPUs could feature dedicated neural processing units, potentially expanding their capabilities beyond traditional graphics rendering to include AI and machine learning workloads directly on the GPU.
