X.Org Server Proposes New 'main' Git Branch, Aims for 2026 Releases

A proposal has been put forth for a new X.Org Server "main" Git branch, aiming to revitalize its development. This initiative seeks to clean up "development lapses over the past few years" within the project's codebase. The primary objective is to facilitate new releases, with "the hope is for having a new cleaned-up X.Org Server and XWayland Git branch for shipping new releases in 2026," according to Phoronix. This development highlights ongoing maintenance efforts for the X.Org Server, particularly for XWayland, which remains crucial for running X11 applications on Wayland-based desktops. The move comes as some major desktop environments, such as GNOME with its recently announced GNOME 50 Alpha release, are transitioning to Wayland-only sessions, removing X11 support.
