Ubuntu 26.04 LTS 'Resolute Raccoon' Released with Wayland-Only Desktop, Linux 7.0
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS "Resolute Raccoon" has been officially released today, April 24, 2026. This long-term support release marks a significant architectural shift as "the first LTS in Ubuntu's history to ship without an Xorg desktop session," according to OMG! Ubuntu, defaulting entirely to Wayland. The distribution is powered by the recently stabilized Linux 7.0 kernel and features the GNOME 50 desktop environment. Users will find new default video player and system monitor applications, alongside enhanced Deb package management integration within the App Center. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS provides a minimum of 5 years of updates, extendable to a total of 10 years of security coverage with Ubuntu Pro. This release consolidates two years of improvements, incorporating changes from the three interim releases since Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
