Community Member Recreates Unity Desktop with Wayfire and Libadwaita
Ubuntu community member Muqtxdir recently recreated the Unity desktop shell, leveraging the Wayfire compositor, gtk4-layer-shell, and Libadwaita. This experimental project visualizes a modern evolution of the Unity desktop, demonstrating how it could operate within a Wayland environment. The work reconstructs key Unity elements such as the Launcher and Dash, integrating them into a Wayfire session. According to OMG! Ubuntu, the experiment aims at "re-building ubuntu's unity shell in a wayfire session through gtk4-layer-shell and libadwaita widgetry." This showcases the capabilities of current Wayland compositors and GTK toolkits for developing custom and integrated desktop environments, offering a glimpse into potential future desktop designs beyond traditional X11-based approaches.
