Collabora Details OpenXR Ocean Soundscape Experience for Environmental Advocacy
Collabora recently detailed its collaboration with environmental nonprofit SOMAR on an open source Extended Reality (XR) experience. This application, built on OpenXR, immerses users in the underwater soundscape of Portugal's Algarve, utilizing real acoustic recordings to demonstrate the harmful effects of human-made noise pollution on marine life. Designed for broad accessibility, the experience supports both standalone XR headsets and Google Cardboard-compatible phone setups. SOMAR has already debuted the application publicly, using it as an advocacy tool with students, families, and the general public. Collabora published a blog post about this work on April 22, 2026.
