Valve Ships SteamOS 3.8.6 Beta With Initial Native AMD HDMI VRR Support

Valve released the SteamOS 3.8.6 beta yesterday, May 29, 2026. This beta update introduces initial native support for AMD HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Phoronix reported that the beta "contains a number of notable enhancements, including native HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support in initial form." This integration enables SteamOS, especially for devices like the Steam Deck when connected to compatible external displays via HDMI, to utilize VRR. The feature aims to provide a smoother visual experience by synchronizing the display's refresh rate with the GPU's frame output, which can reduce screen tearing and stuttering during gaming and general use.
