Linux 7.2 Kernel Gains Initial Boot Support for Apple M3 Macs
The upcoming Linux 7.2 mainline kernel is expected to include initial support enabling it to boot on Apple M3 devices, such as the M3-powered iMac and MacBook products. This development marks a foundational step towards broader Linux compatibility on Apple Silicon hardware. However, Phoronix reports that functional support for daily usage remains significantly limited. According to the publication, it is "still a long ways to go before it will actually be useful for any Apple M3 daily usage under Linux," with overall support for these 2-3 year old Apple Macs described as "very limited." While this allows the kernel to start on M3 machines, comprehensive hardware enablement for practical use is not yet present.
