ZLUDA v6 Enables PhysX on AMD GPUs; Commercial Funding Cut, Shifts Project Focus
ZLUDA v6 has been released, demonstrating effective support for NVIDIA PhysX technology on AMD GPUs. The open-source project, which initially provided CUDA compatibility for Intel graphics and later AMD GPUs, recently experienced a cessation of its commercial funding from an unspecified party. This funding had been directed towards ZLUDA's efforts in multi-GPU CUDA for AI applications. Following the termination of its funding, the ZLUDA project has re-prioritized its development trajectory. According to Phoronix, "ZLUDA is focusing on PhysX and better Windows support," with version 6 successfully achieving "PhysX running well on AMD GPUs." This shift signifies a new strategic direction for ZLUDA, leveraging its GPU compatibility layers for physics simulation rather than its recent AI focus.
