GNOME Mutter Compositor Gains GPU Reset Recovery Capabilities
GNOME's Mutter compositor is slated to integrate robust GPU reset recovery handling, a significant development preventing the complete session wipeouts that currently occur during such events. This new functionality is being developed through a Google Summer of Code (GSoC) project this year. Phoronix reports that while "typically quite rare encountering a GPU reset under Linux in most conditions, currently if encountering one under GNOME your session gets wiped out." The ongoing GSoC work aims to provide a stable recovery mechanism, ensuring the user session can resume rather than terminate. This enhancement will significantly improve the desktop environment's stability and user experience against hardware-related interruptions by allowing for graceful recovery from GPU resets.
