AMDGPU/AMDKFD Updates Bring DRM Format Modifiers to GFX6 in Linux 7.3
AMD has submitted new updates for the AMDGPU kernel graphics driver and AMDKFD kernel compute driver. These updates, sent out today, July 30, 2026, introduce support for DRM Format Modifiers on older AMD GFX6 GPUs. This feature is targeting the upcoming Linux 7.3 kernel, which is nearing its feature freeze for next month’s release. The Phoronix report notes that this includes "some nice feature work in store for this week." The addition of DRM Format Modifiers to these older GPUs extends modern graphics capabilities previously unavailable, enhancing their compatibility and performance with newer display technologies and applications. Valve's involvement was also acknowledged in the initial report.
