AMD has recently released a new series of patches for its AMDGPU Linux kernel driver, introducing support for HDMI 2.1 Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Rate Refresh (VRR). This development is part of AMD's ongoing efforts to deliver full HDMI 2.1 functionality within its open-source Linux graphics stack. The new patches follow previous work that enabled HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link (FRL) and Display Stream Compression (DSC). According to Phoronix, these additions contribute to "working toward a complete HDMI 2.1 implementation" in the AMD Linux driver. This update is significant for users connecting AMD-powered Linux systems to modern displays and TVs, as ALLM reduces input lag for gaming, and VRR provides smoother, tear-free visuals.
