MPV 0.41 Released: Wayland Improvements, Vulkan Video Acceleration Preferred

MPV 0.41, an open-source video player derived from MPlayer/mplayer2, was released today, December 22, 2025. This new feature release brings significant improvements to Wayland support on Linux. A key change is the player's new preference for Vulkan Video acceleration over other video decode APIs, aiming to leverage modern hardware capabilities for video decoding. The release also includes support for ambient light on Linux systems. According to Phoronix, "With MPV 0.41 there is a big focus on improving Wayland support as well as now preferring Vulkan Video acceleration over alternative video decode APIs..." This update focuses on enhancing the user experience on Wayland compositors and utilizing Vulkan for video decoding.
