RADV Surpasses AMDVLK in Final Benchmarks as AMD Ceases Driver Development

Phoronix today published final benchmarks comparing the open-source Mesa.">RADV Mesa Vulkan driver against the now-defunct proprietary AMDVLK driver. Earlier this year, AMD ceased development of AMDVLK, dropping their proprietary OpenGL and Vulkan driver components from their Radeon Software for Linux packages. This move was largely in line with community preference, as enthusiasts and Linux gamers have long favored the RadeonSI and RADV Mesa drivers. Historically, AMDVLK had an advantage in Vulkan ray-tracing performance. However, RADV's ray-tracing capabilities saw significant improvements throughout 2025. The new benchmarks, released on Christmas 2025, provide a conclusive assessment of RADV's current performance against the discontinued proprietary alternative, affirming its strong standing.
