AMD & Samsung Partner on Vulkan DGF Geometry Compression Extension

AMD recently announced the Dense Geometry Format (DGF) and DGF SuperCompression (DGFS) initiatives, developed in partnership with Samsung. DGF is being introduced as a multivendor Vulkan extension aimed at dramatically reducing geometry sizes. This compression standard is designed to lower memory footprint and latency for ray-traced real-time 3D applications, alongside simplifying engine integration. DGF SuperCompression (DGFS) builds upon DGF by further decreasing geometry file sizes. According to AMD GPUOpen, DGFS "cuts DGF geometry file sizes while preserving exact block reconstruction and enabling fast decode to either DGF blocks or conventional meshlets for cross-device deployment." This dual approach seeks to optimize geometry handling across various hardware configurations and graphics pipelines.
