UWA, Khronos Release First glTF-based Spatial Imaging Standard for 3DGS
The UHD World Association (UWA), in technical coordination with the Khronos Group's 3D Formats Working Group, announced today the release of the industry's first spatial imaging standard for 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) content. This new standard aims to address the current lack of a common exchange format for 3DGS data. The standard centers on glTF as its core storage format, supporting both meshes and point clouds, with outer-layer packaging options via MP4 and HEIF. A key component is the introduction of EGSC, a new codec "delivering up to 30x compression with visually lossless quality on mobile devices." UWA and the Khronos Group have also formed a strategic partnership to develop globally unified standards for spatial imaging, establishing the CKAP China Graphics Working Group for continued coordination.
