Khronos Group Standardizes 3D Gaussian Splats in glTF with New Extension
Khronos Group President Neil Trevett recently announced the new glTF extension that standardizes the integration of 3D Gaussian splats into the format.">KHR_gaussian_splatting extension for glTF. This extension integrates 3D Gaussian splats into the royalty-free open format, aiming to standardize the representation of 3D content across the web. Trevett noted "the core splat representation as stable enough for standardization" and that Khronos moved quickly "to prevent ecosystem fragmentation." The extension includes a fallback mechanism for viewers that do not support the new format, rendering content as point clouds. This development positions glTF to evolve beyond a visual container, supporting scene understanding and semantics crucial for infrastructure in the spatial web and embodied AI applications.
