Khronos Standardizes KHR_gaussian_splatting for glTF, Enabling 3D Gaussian Splats

Khronos Group recently standardized the KHR_gaussian_splatting extension for glTF, integrating 3D Gaussian splats into the royalty-free open format used for 3D content across the web. Khronos Group President Neil Trevett explained that the "core splat representation [is] stable enough for standardization," allowing Khronos to move quickly to prevent ecosystem fragmentation. This extension enables new forms of efficient 3D content representation within glTF, providing a graceful fallback to point cloud rendering for viewers that do not support the new format. Trevett also outlined glTF's broader vision to evolve beyond a visual container, supporting scene understanding and semantics. This positions glTF as foundational infrastructure for both the Spatial web and Embodied AI, leveraging the new capabilities brought by 3D Gaussian splats for advanced 3D content applications.
