libx11-compat Works on Xlib Re-implementation Atop SDL for Wayland, macOS, Android
The libx11-compat project is currently being developed to enhance the compatibility of traditional X11 clients across modern computing environments. This initiative aims to re-implement the Xlib client library by building it atop SDL2 and SDL3 interfaces. The primary objective is to enable broad underlying platform coverage, allowing existing X11 applications to run effectively on Wayland-based Linux desktops, macOS, and Android. This work provides a new avenue for extending the utility of X11 software in evolving display server and operating system landscapes, as reported by Phoronix recently.
