Bentley Systems recently announced a proposed glTF extension aimed at standardizing Gaussian splats. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Khronos Group, Open Geospatial Consortium, and OpenUSD, seeks to establish an open standard for this 3D rendering technique. The standardization is intended to create a reliable path from photorealistic 3D capture to ongoing infrastructure monitoring. According to Bentley, the effort is "creating a path from photorealistic 3D capture to lifelong infrastructure monitoring." The cross-industry collaboration ensures the standard will serve diverse sectors, including infrastructure engineering, geospatial visualization, e-commerce, gaming, and entertainment. This development allows for broader industry adoption and utilization of Gaussian splat technology.
