D7VK v1.8 Extends Legacy Direct3D Support to D3D3 Atop Vulkan API
D7VK v1.8 was released today, further advancing its efforts to translate legacy Microsoft Direct3D APIs to the modern Vulkan graphics API. This new version extends support, which originally began with Direct3D 7, to now encompass Direct3D 3. D7VK is built upon the foundation of DXVK, a translation layer widely known for its role in Steam Play (Proton) where it provides Direct3D 8 through Direct3D 11 support on Linux. The project's continued development aims to enhance the compatibility and performance of older Windows games and applications by running them on Vulkan. As reported by Phoronix, D7VK "continues enhancing its legacy D3D API support that over time has stretched now from D3D7 to D3D3." This allows for broader hardware compatibility and improved efficiency for titles relying on these older graphics interfaces on Linux systems.
