Khronos Announces glTF 2.1 Plans for Complex 3D Scene Interoperability
The Khronos 3D Formats Working Group announced today plans for glTF 2.1, a backward-compatible revision of the core specification. This update is specifically designed to improve the format's handling of large, composed 3D scenes, building on the capabilities of glTF 2.0 which was released in 2017. The primary motivation for glTF 2.1 is to ensure the format works effectively for complex scene structures, where currently developers often resort to proprietary conventions or custom tooling. As the Khronos Group stated, the goal is "making glTF work as well for large, composed scenes as it already does for single assets." All new features will target real gaps that force teams towards workarounds that impact interoperability.
