Khronos Announces glTF 2.1 for Large Scene Support & Interoperability

The Khronos 3D Formats Working Group today announced plans for glTF 2.1, a focused and backward-compatible revision of the core glTF specification. This update, the first major revision since glTF 2.0 was released in 2017, aims to enhance the format's capability for large, composed scenes. The primary motivation behind glTF 2.1 is to ensure the format works as effectively for complex scenes as it does for single assets. The Khronos Group stated that "Every feature in this release addresses a real gap that today forces teams toward proprietary conventions, custom tooling, or workarounds that break interoperability," indicating a focus on reducing reliance on custom solutions and improving interoperability for 3D development workflows.
