Vulkan Ray Tracing Deprecates Host-Side AS Builds, Adopts Device-Address Path

The Khronos Group this week announced the deprecation of host-side ray tracing acceleration structure build commands in Vulkan. This change streamlines the Vulkan Ray Tracing API, moving towards a single, device-address-based path for acceleration structure creation. The decision aligns Vulkan Ray Tracing with the direction of DirectX Raytracing, modern engine architecture, and current hardware trends. According to Khronos, the host-side path has seen "limited adoption" over the six years since Vulkan Ray Tracing was launched. Developers frequently found it "more cumbersome than helpful," while implementers faced increased complexity and friction in maintaining parallel host and GPU command models. This deprecation aims to simplify the API, reduce implementation overhead, and facilitate future ray tracing API evolution.
