Igalia Optimizes Vulkan for Valve Steam Devices, Enhances Proton Compatibility
Igalia announced about a month ago, in November 2025, their collaboration with Valve focused on optimizing Vulkan for upcoming Steam devices. The engineering efforts have involved implementing and reviewing numerous Vulkan extensions, alongside ensuring correct rendering for Direct3D 11, Direct3D 12, and OpenGL games when utilizing compatibility layers such as DXVK, vkd3d-proton, and Zink. Danylo Piliaiev of Igalia's Graphics Team noted the impact, stating, "We achieved higher correctness than the proprietary driver and, in many cases, Mesa3D Turnip is faster as well." This initiative directly contributes to improving the overall performance and visual fidelity of games on Linux within Valve's Steam ecosystem.
